CON PANELS

I discovered my love of hosting panels in the most self-important way imaginable—I presented a panel about pixcelation to a con as a means of receiving a free badge.

But it quickly became something more than that.

I have met so many wonderful and interesting people, explored so many fascinating topics and celebrated some of the things I love most in this world.

And what’s more—this is only the beginning.

What follows is a comprehensive list of panels I have created and hosted since 2017. If you are a con owner or programming department head and would like to bring me to your event, send an email to pixcel@pixcelverse.com! I’d love to discuss the possibility of us working together to help make your event much more pixcelated!

PANEL IMAGE:PANEL NAME + DESCRIPTION:
ANIME AMBUSH: WHAT HAVE I BEEN MISSING?!

If you’ve ever tried watching the full slate of seasonal anime, you’ve likely noticed that it’s close to impossible, right?! In this panel, we’ll outline the most notable — whether that makes them good or bad — anime to air in the past few seasons. We’ll watch the OPs and EDs of the various anime, discuss each one, and incorporate audience participation by asking their opinions of each.
OTAKU OBENTOU: UNDERRATED
ANIME TO PUT ON YOUR RADAR

It should be a crime to ignore certain anime titles. Ignoring the fascistic implications of that, in this panel, we’ll discuss some of the most underrated anime, whether that means they lacked the audience necessary to receive a second season, or if that means people initially hated it for what seems like no reason. We’ll watch the OPs and EDs of the various anime, discuss each one, and incorporate audience participation by asking their opinions of each.
ANIME AMBUSH: PICKING APART
THE MONOGATARI OPS

In the Monogatari Series, based on the light novels by Nisio Isin and produced by animation powerhouse Studio SHAFT, not everything is as it seems. This is especially true in its OPs, which are often shrouded in mystery. In most of these one-to-two minute sequences, there’s a wealth of symbolism and hidden meanings that can only be interpreted by studying them more than any one human should. In this panel, we’ll be doing just that. Join me as we unpack the various parallels that can be found in these openings.

BEST OF THE BEST

It’s no joke that the number of anime studios actively making new content is insane, but which of them can be qualified as the best? In this line of panels, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at one of many studios and the mark they left on the community — their history, the key players who helped make them what they are today, shining examples of their best work, and much more!

NOTE: THIS PANEL IS EQUIPPED TO COVER SHAFT, GAINAX/TRIGGER/KHARA, KYOTO ANIMATION, BONES, and LERCHE, BUT WITH NOTICE, ANY STUDIO CAN BE COVERED.
IT’S TIME TO GET SPOOPY: A DIVE INTO
INTERNET HORROR / ABSURDISM

It’s fascinating how a well-written concept, in the right hands, can send shivers down your spine with limited technology, especially when it comes to the internet. In this panel, we’ll take a deep dive into the world of absurdist / internet horror that can be found on the internet, including ARGs, shorts, and more long-running series’ in the vein of Marble Hornets and Alan Resnick.
ANIME AMBUSH: WHAT THE CLANNAD?!

In Clannad, we are given a highly emotional and impactful story of family, love, and sacrifice, but what if I were to tell you that there’s more to it than meets the eye? In this panel, I will detail how I firmly believe the anime series by Kyoto Animation and the film by Toei Animation can fit into the same timeline, as well as other crackpot theories and head canons.
INDIE IMPACT: FREE / CHEAP GAMES THAT
YOU (PROBABLY) HAVEN’T HEARD OF

In this modern age of gaming, where literally anyone can upload their shovelware to the internet, it takes a bit more curating to find the games worth playing. In this panel, we’ll showcase several indie-and-AA games, their trailers, and express to you whether they’re worth your money, or if they’re best ignored.

EXTREME ROULETTE KARAOKE

In this variation on a familiar theme, players will volunteer to spin the wheel, and whatever they land on is what they must sing. If they do not know the song, they can make up words, or they can invite one other person who does know the song to join them on stage.
